Panorama begins in the shadows as an unidentified visiting neurosurgeon watches Robert Spetzler clipping an aneurysm. Moving right to left in the panorama, Spetzler operates the sterile-shrouded intraoperative microscope with mouth controls—the assisting resident leans back to check on the TV image projected by the scope. Left of the patient, neuroanesthesiologist Steve Cardon makes adjustments on the cart that contains the inhalation gases and monitoring devices. Silhouetted against the patient’s illuminated scans Martin Nunemacher, the anesthesia tech, watches the blips of pulse beats and brain waves for any sign of alarm as nurse Jill Carlson passes a message outside the operating room.
